Notes from Meetup #19: Festival Special - Startup Showcase

Could it be that the Covid-19 pandemic and the era of lockdowns and social distancing is truly over??

Well, we all hope so and are working very hard to reestablish our bimonthly schedule of meetups, starting with edition number 19 which was held during the Sheffield Digital Festival on Monday the 9th of May at the Electric Works!

The theme for this edition was showcasing local smart city startups, and we were delighted to shine a light on four entrepreneurs who are transforming our city in using a variety of new technologies:

  • Mohamad Matbouli from GoParkly on "How Parking Creates Connected Cities".

  • Neal Byers from WorkfromHub on "Re-imagining underused spaces".

  • David Dixon from Future Greens on "The Future of Farming".

  • Katie Steel from Cheribim asked: "Can an app for churches enable BIM for historic buildings?"

And this was followed, as always, by yours truly, Chris Dymond, who presented the latest local smart city news in rapid-fire fashion.

You can watch their videos below, however I must apologise for the poor sound quality on Mohamad, Neil and David’s presentations - it turns out the radio mic connection was just a bit too tenuous when speakers were the other side of the projection screen, which didn’t happen during the sound check. Many apologies to those speakers, but I hope their words can still be understood, and we’ll endeavour to edit the subtitles where it’s not translating correctly.

Many thanks to the folks at the Electric Works and Creative Space Management for hosting and catering the event and of course to all of our regular sponsors Arup, Pitch-In and Sheffield Digital.

Many thanks also to everyone who came along, it was absolutely fantastic to see everyone in person again, and as event organisers there’s nothing better than hearing the hubbub of conversation and seeing so many people engaged with each other and enjoying themselves!

The next SmartSheffield meetup is already scheduled for Monday the 11th of July at Arup, make sure you book your tickets asap as places are limited!
